JUST one in ten people would buy a new home in Basildon town centre if they were built, startling new figures have revealed.
In a hammer blow for council bosses, the data as part of a consultation, shows how just nine per cent of Basildon’s residents would buy a new property in the “tired” town centre.
The consultation, which more than 3,000 people took part in, also revealed residents are demanding a “new look” town centre, with an increase in shops and green space.
This comes after Tory chiefs scrapped plans to build thousands of homes in the town centre, which were set to drive a regeneration under the previous administration.
Tony Hedley, deputy leader, said: “We have listened and will continue to give residents the opportunity to give us their opinions so that we can regenerate our town with their views in mind.
“Residents have told us that high rise housing is not what they want for our town centre, so we will put in place a new regeneration strategy for the town centre to reflect these views.
“The results speak for themselves.
“Our residents want a destination of choice, as well as a place to shop.
“The results show that our people want to see green, brighter and safer spaces with plenty to see and do as well as a competitive retail offer. We must now look forward to a town centre shaped by those who will live, work and play in it.”
Plans are set to be approved for 245 homes in 11-storey tower blocks in the town centre.
Andrew Baggott, leader of the council, added: “I think we can all agree that the town centre needs to adapt and move with the times, but there are a few key areas like housing that need some further attention.
“We will look at the results of the early engagement exercise and formally consult to get more detail and listen to those who have put us here.”
Previously, concerns were allayed over the future of the Eastgate Shopping Centre after H&M and Next announced it was closing stores.
More than a third of residents indicated that shops are what they like most about the town. Almost two thirds also said they would like to see more businesses open up and for more retail.
